How to keep your teeth healthy and strong?

The
healthier and stronger your teeth are, the happier and hygienic you look.
That’s why it’s important to take great care of your teeth by brushing,
flossing, and visiting the dentist. I will mention several ways here that how
you can keep your teeth healthy and strong and preventing your teeth from tooth
decay. Having strong teeth is just as important as strong bones. Toothache is
most common in people who don’t take care of their teeth. Dental caries and
tooth decay are also present in these people. Brushing regularly can prevent
gum disease. Gum disease is caused by bacteria found in plaque and tartar. Plaque is a sticky film that forms on the teeth. It is mostly made up of bacteria, mucus, food, and other particles. When plaque is not removed, it hardens into tartar, which gives a home to bacteria, according to the American Dental Association (ADA). Bacteria in plaque and tartar cause inflammation of the gums, called gingivitis. Tartar can only be removed by a dental hygienist or dentist

Following are the things you have to do to keep your teeth healthy and
strong:

  • ·
    Eat
    calcium-rich foods.
  • ·
    Drink
water instead of soda or juice.
  • ·
    Brush
    with an enamel-strengthening toothpaste.
  • ·
    Don’t
go to bed without brushing your teeth.
  • ·
Watch what you eat, stay on a balanced diet.
  • ·
    Protect
    your teeth from injury
  • ·
    See
your dentist for regular check-ups. You should also visit your dentist if you
have a dental problem such as a toothache or bleeding gums.
  • ·
    Use
a fluoride toothpaste The American Dental Association (ADA) calls fluoride
“nature’s cavity fighter” because it strengthens your enamel and
helps repair the early stages of tooth decay.
  • ·      Consider
    mouthwash.
  • ·
    Avoid
    over-brushing
    .

World Disability Day

Your ability is stronger than your Disability!

According to WHO, 3 December is
International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD). This day is also known
as International Handicapped Day. On this Day WHO joins partners to celebrate
“a day for all”. This theme reflects a growing understanding that
disability is part of the human condition. Almost everyone will be temporarily
or permanently impaired at some point in life. According to the UN, the observance
of the Day aims to promote an understanding of disability issues and mobilize
support for the dignity, rights, and well-being of persons with disabilities.

On this day we should spare time from our
busy routines and spent it with handicapped and disabled persons. We should encourage
them that their disability can’t create a hindrance in their career and life.
They can do anything they want to. Let me tell you some great examples of
courage, determination, and self-esteem.

Cosmologist Stephen Hawking was a scientist known for his work with black holes
and relativity. At the end of the first score of his life, he was diagnosed with
disability disease Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or ALS. ALS is one of several
types of motor neuron diseases. Over time Stephen loses his limbs movement
and speech ability.
 Stephen Hawking said
“My advice to other disabled people would be, concentrate on things your
disability doesn’t prevent you from doing well and don’t regret the things it
interferes with. Don’t be disabled in spirit as well as physically.”
This is a great source of motivation for
them. Also as a member of society, our duty is not to make fun of any
handicapped person. We should rather help them like if a person is in a
wheelchair and is all alone we should help him in his movement. We should help
blind people to cross the road. If we see someone humiliating a disabled person we
should stop him. We should tell disabled persons they should stay optimistic and
they should prove their abilities.

Helen
Keller
said “Optimism is the faith that leads to achievement. Nothing can
be done without hope and confidence.” At the age of 19 months, Helen became
deaf and blind as a result of an unknown illness. She was an American author,
political activist, and lecturer. Being deaf-blind she earned the degree of
Bachelor of Arts.

Muniba Mazari is known as the Iron Lady of Pakistan. At the age of
21,
Muniba was left paralyzed after a fatal car accident. Her backbone was
crushed and she sustained multiple injuries and fractures to her arm, shoulder,
ribs, and collarbone. Now she is known as a Pakistani activist, anchor artist,
model, singer, and motivational speaker. She became the National Ambassador for
UN Women Pakistan after being shortlisted in the 100 Inspirational Women of
2015 by BBC. She also made it to the Forbes 30 under 30 lists for 2016. These
stories are a source of motivation for all of us as they tell us that our
abilities are our strength. We should celebrate this day with such persons and
pay tribute to them. They are the real heroes. Despite their disability, they
have
proved their abilities!

How to prepare for MDCAT?

A medical and dental college admission
test is very important for a pre-medical student to get admission to his dream
medical college. It is a very important time in the life of a medical student as
his whole future, dreams, and passions rely on this single test. This test due
to its importance as it makes 50% of the total percentile, is very stressful
and creates pressure on students. I as a medical student has gone through
all these things back in 2019. Let me tell you what I experienced, I joined an entry test coaching academy which most students do but I think students
who are the aspirants of MDCAT should not join coaching centers. There is only
one advantage of joining a coaching center as they daily take entry test based
pattern mock tests and you get familiar with the type of questions and get efficient
in filling the response forms. But I think one can do all this on his own by
buying the past papers and prints of response forms and practice that. After
all, you have to prepare yourself it doesn’t matter which academy you go to, you
have to learn and understand things on your own. Let me tell you that it is
a simple test which is from your course books of F.Sc. If you have cleared your
concepts well and have revised well the syllabus and have a
good practice of solving and time management, you can easily secure
good marks. You get ample time for preparation before MDCAT so you should utilize
it properly by
making a timetable. You
should know that MDCAT multiple-choice questions (MCQs) of all difficulty
levels and make the proportion of paper. Hard MCQs which
make part of the MDCAT test is where smart work comes into play but as the great
proverb says
“Practice makes a man
perfect”
practice is everything. Also Time management, stress management are two things which you have to do because despite
having good preparation you can’t perform well. For time management and stress
management practice is also the key to success as it develops faith in you that
you can do it. By doing practice you got to know about your weak points and you
get an opportunity to strengthen your weak points. Also, make a strategy according
to things you learned during your practice that how you will solve the test like
how much time you will spend on specific subjects. Do your part work hard, stay
determined and focused, and leave rest to Allah.

In sha Allah you will succeed!

Coronavirus Vaccine progress and how long it will take to make COVID-19 Vaccine?

The vaccine is a special type of drug
that helps the body fight against a specific disease for which the vaccine is
made. It doesn’t cure the disease but prevents the body from getting affected. The covid-19 pandemic caused by the SARS-Cov-2 virus has affected the world badly.
Millions of people got affected and more than 1 million people have died until
now. There is a dire need for the Covid-19 vaccine to help people prevent the disease
and decrease the prevalence of the disease. So pharmaceutical companies across the
world are making the vaccines which are underway. Neither of the vaccines is
approved for general use until now but according to sources, the COVID-19 vaccine
will be available in the spring or
summer of 2021.
Vaccine formation takes time as it has to go through
different phases to prove its efficiency and effectiveness.
Phases of Vaccine Development are
like i
n several phases, it is tested in the number of people who volunteer for the testing. The number of people is increased
in the phases to see the results. From some small no. of people to hundreds and
finally, thousands of people are trialed and then the vaccine is finally made.

According to
The Guardian following are the figures of vaccine development in several
phases:

But until
the availability of vaccine we have to strictly follow the sops and preventive measures
which include wearing masks, maintaining social distance, self-isolation and
sanitizing your hands regularly. In this way by following the preventive
measures we can decrease the prevalence of disease and number of deaths.

World AIDS Day- 1st Dec

On 1st December,
every year, the world commemorates World AIDS Day. This day is meant to support
the people who got affected by the AIDS and have died. Each year World AIDS Day
focuses on a specific theme. Established by the World Health Organization in
1988, World AIDS Day is an opportunity for people worldwide to unite in the
fight against HIV and raise awareness of the continuing epidemic around the
globe. This year the theme will be Global
solidarity, shared responsibility.
Last year the theme was Communities make the difference.

What is AIDS/HIV?

Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) is a chronic, potentially
life-threatening condition caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)
.
It damages your immune system and thus decreases the ability of body to fight
against everyday diseases and infections. There’s no cure for HIV/AIDS, but medications can slow the progression of
the disease. Untreated HIV affects and kills CD4 cells, which are a type of
immune cell called T cell.

Transmission:

HIV is transmitted through bodily fluids that include:

·
blood

·
semen

·
vaginal
and rectal fluids

·
breast
milk

Symptoms:

According to nhs.uk:

Most people experience a
short flu-like illness 2 to 6 weeks
after HIV infection, which lasts for a week or 2. After these symptoms
disappear, HIV may not cause any symptoms for many years, although the virus
continues to damage your immune system.

Prevention:

According to cdc.gov:

You can
use strategies such as
abstinence (not having
sex), never sharing needles, and
using condoms the right way every time you have sex. You may also be able to
take advantage of HIV prevention medicines such as
pre
-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and post-exposure prophylaxis
(PEP)
.

Living with HIV is not a
reason to stop loving. When we support people with HIV, we make it easier for
them to lead healthy lives. Play your part and end HIV stigma! This World AIDS
day, let us unite in solidarity to support the people living with HIV/AIDS!

Why Fast Food is bad for you?

Sweet, delicious, sugary, and full of fat food makes you happy with every
single bite but is it really worth it?

Fast food or junk food is very popular because it is cheap, convenient
and most importantly satisfies our taste buds. Getting junk food at your
doorstep has made fast food appear in our meals more than ever. Occasionally it’s
okay to have it but regularly relying on it will have adverse effects on your
health. Fast food is highly processed and contains large amounts of
carbohydrates, added sugar, unhealthy fats, and sodium.  Here are the reasons why it’s bad for you as
it causes the following:

Fast food makes you Lazy:

A new study finds eating too much junk food doesn’t only make you
fat, it may also make you mentally slower or less motivated.

High BP:

A diet (Fast Food) high in sodium is also dangerous for people with
blood pressure conditions. Sodium can elevate blood pressure and put stress on
your heart and cardiovascular system.

Depression:

Eating fast food will increase the risk of depression as it damages your mental health according to research.

Extra calories: Fast food contains more
calories than required by the body and is responsible for the deposition of fat in
your body and thus causes obesity.

Diabetes:

Research indicates that fast food
promotes insulin resistance, which can lead to type 2 diabetes, as well as
weight gain.

Weight gain:

You take a large amount of unhealthy
calories by eating fast food which causes obesity and ultimately weight gain.

 Heart disease or stroke:

Trans-fat is the type of fat that is present in fast food and is not
good for your health. The more trans-fat you eat, the greater your risk of
heart and blood vessel disease.

High cholesterol:

With high cholesterol, you can develop fatty deposits in your blood
vessels. Eventually, these deposits grow, making it difficult for enough blood
to flow through your arteries.
You can get healthy nutrients from home-cooked fresh vegetables and
food. “The food you eat can be either the safest and most powerful form of
medicine or the slowest form of poison.” – Ann Wigmore

You can decrease your cravings for fast food by avoiding them and
eating healthy food. Eat healthy! Be healthy!

“Healthy does NOT mean starving yourself EVER. Healthy means eating
the right food in the right amount”. – Karen Salmansohn
